The honest answer is that a designed-and-built garden is quoted per project — and any firm that gives you a single per-square-metre rate over the phone, before seeing your space, is guessing.
That is not evasion. It is the truth of how gardens are priced. Two plots of the same size can differ in cost by a wide margin depending on what is built on them. So instead of a fake number, this guide explains what actually moves the cost, and shares the few real, single-source figures that exist in this market — flagged honestly as indicative.
Why There Is No Honest “Per Square Metre” Rate
A garden is not a carpet you price by area. The cost is driven by what goes into it:
Groundwork and Drainage
This is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether your garden survives the rains. Levelling, drainage runs, and soil correction can be a small job or the biggest line on the quote, depending on how the water moves across your plot. Hardscape
Paving, walls, steps, edging, a patio, a pergola — hardscape is built, not planted, and it is usually the single largest cost in a garden. A lawn-and-beds garden and a garden with a paved entertaining terrace and retaining walls are different projects at different prices.
Planting and Lawn
Trees, shrubs, bed planting, and the lawn itself. New lawn (turfing) is one of the few items with a published reference figure — see below.
Irrigation
A drip or sprinkler system installed under the garden is an upfront cost that protects everything planted above it through the dry season and Harmattan.
